New Name, New Look

We recently had the opportunity to work with Education Northwest, a Portland non-profit with over 40 years of experience working with schools, districts, and communities. They’ve recently refreshed their brand, so the Education Northwest name is new, and that means updating and re-designing all of their resources. The process also included creating new employee IDs, so it was the perfect time to shoot updated employee photos, too.

We brought our gear on-site to a small conference room they requested we use, and set up the space for clean and simple professional headshots. Since we were working with people who have very busy schedules, that also meant we had to work fast! We got each individual in and out the door in a matter of minutes, so they could easily squeeze in their new photo between conference calls, face-to-face meetings, and important work out in the field.

Be sure to check out the Education Northwest web site to see the great work they’re doing, and the services and resources they offer to help teachers, mentors, and other folks who are working to shape their schools and communities.

Snapshot: An Artist as Art

I’ll confess: as beautiful and interesting as China was, I found myself more interested in the people than in the landscapes and buildings. The art and architecture of Asia has always been interesting to me, but the character of the people is something you don’t find as easily in books or libraries.

One of the really cool things about Beijing is how active the parks are. You’ll see people grouping together for dancing, activities, or just exercising, at almost any hour of the day. Even at sightseeing locations like the Summer Palace, there were people throughout the space enjoying the environment and the scenery.

I caught a shot of a calligraphy artist doing his thing, and he was just one of several capturing the mellow waters and cooling breezes of the artificial lake near the Summer Palace.

Friends with Horses – senior portrait photography in Portland, OR

After working with Melissa on her professional headshots, we were jazzed to hear from her again, when her daughter Madeline needed senior portraits. And we were even more intrigued when we heard Madeline’s request for the session: we’d be shooting at a horse farm!

Madeline has a fair bit of experience in the saddle, so we met with her at the farm, just outside of Beaverton, and she did her session with one of the horses (named Go) she rides most. It was a cold and cloudy day, and we didn’t want to frighten the horse with any flashes, but we still caught a nice variety of shots, and some really cute and genuine moments between her and Go.

We’ve been missing the sun. It’s getting dark outside earlier and earlier, and when the weather is rainy and thick with clouds, it barely feels like daylight at all. And it’s getting colder.

It makes us crave a thick book to read, and a warm fireplace to read it by. It has us jonesing for hot cups of coffee, long after the morning has passed. It’s tea, and hot chocolate, and baking in the kitchen. Pumpkins and squashes, cushy knit scarves and hats, a pile of blankets warm from the dryer.

It seems like summer was just yesterday–and yeah, it hasn’t really been that long–but looking back at sunny days like this one is pretty nice, even if they do feel far away. It’s okay, time seems to just blow right past us, so the sun will be back before we know it.

A Vintage-Inspired Fall Collection – fashion, commercial, and product photography in Portland, OR

A few days ago, local designer Alyson Clair unveiled her latest collection for Fall 2009 on her web site, so now we finally get to share some of the photos!

We shot outside an old Vavoline building in an industrial area of North Portland, and it was a cool spot, but it also had its challenges. If we’d started shooting too early, and the outdoor light would be too harsh, but if we waited too long, the neighboring buildings would cast a huge shadow across our setting. Throw in some partly-cloudy conditions that had the sun passing behind clouds periodically, and things get a bit tricky.

That meant we had to work fast and be ready to make quick changes, which is, fortunately, never a problem when we’re doing the shooting. We shot 3 different models in multiple outfits, and finished with plenty of time to savor our Saint Cupcakes (courtesy of Alyson), and then head out to enjoy the rest of a gorgeous day.

If you like what you see, you can pick up these vintage-inspired, figure-flattering pieces at several boutiques in town. Check out the Clair Vintage Inspired web site for a closer look!

It’s Monday again, and today’s Snapshot is looking back on China, at a couple of policemen who were just doing their job, keeping up security outside the Forbidden City. For most of us, Monday means going back to work. Most folks aren’t too enthusiastic about saying goodbye to the weekend and hello to the workweek, but if every day was a weekend, would we enjoy them as much?

Global Climate Change… the fight’s not over yet! – art, event, and portrait photography in Portland, Oregon

Today marks the 3rd Annual Blog Action Day. And, yeah, we usually reserve this space for cool photos and chatter about the fun we’re having with our photo shoots, but if we can turn you on to making a few positive changes, it’s worth our time to throw in a blog posting that’s not quite our usual.

We’ve all heard about Global Climate Change. We’re Portlanders, and we’re billed as one of the nation’s leaders in the green revolution, so of course we know what’s happening. Being trapped in our homes under a blanket of snow during last December’s two-week Snow-pocalypse was certainly a clue that the climate’s shifting.

There are those who would say that climate change is “normal,” that there isn’t a problem, and that we should just keep on consuming and burning through resources. On the other side of the room, there are those who say that the problem is catastrophic, we’ve already gone too far, and we cannot possibly save ourselves from the deadly global warming that lies in wait for us in the year 2050. (or sooner, depending on how pessimistic the speaker’s feeling today)

But, what if ALL of those people are wrong? What if there is a problem, but it’s something we can fix? If it’s even possible for us to make an impact, to take control of our fate, what are we doing arguing about whether or not there’s a problem?

So, in the interest of thinking more positively, let’s assume that the game’s not over. There are a lot of things we can do to help minimize the damage and live responsibly, and a lot of these things might even make your life more enjoyable. And if you can have a strong, beautiful planet *and* be healthy and at peace enough to fully enjoy it? You can’t do much better than that.

These are just a few ideas.

Change your commute. Sure, moving house is a pain… but then again, so is that 45-minute-each-way commute you’re making 5 or more days a week. If you can move closer to your job, you’d save yourself time and save the world from the excess gas emissions. Or, if you’re self-employed, consider moving your office! We’re moving our studio closer to home, cutting our travel time in half. Now’s a great time to rent, so check out the options.

Or, you can eliminate all of your emissions by riding your bike around town instead of driving. Portland is one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world, so take advantage! Or, if your bike is out of commission, there’s always public transportation.

Shop Local. There’s a reason why we support initiatives like the 3/50 Project, and it’s not just about the local economy. Shopping local means less packaging, less waste, and almost NO shipping or travel. Buy your clothing from local designers, buy your housewares from local merchants and providers, buy your food at the local farmer’s market. The cool part is that, since we’re in Portland, a lot of the locally-sourced things you could be buying come from companies who already exercise green practices, and use sustainable materials.

Just through the process of building our business, we’ve worked with designers who use organic materials, and we’ve learned of green print services, bicycle-powered delivery companies, and even wind-powered web hosting, all coming out of Portland. And food from local farmers tastes amazing. We’re lucky to live in a place where so many businesses are looking to make a difference.

Spruce up your home. Is it drafty in your living room? Are you still using incandescent light bulbs? Have you been itching to start up a garden? Take a couple hours on a weekend to make your house a friendlier place to live: switch to compact fluorescent bulbs. Put up insulation and weather stripping. Use the fireplace instead of the heater (or put on an extra sweater!). Clear out a space in your backyard and plant some tasty veggies.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you could even try cutting down on your trips to the faucet by capturing rainwater. We do live in one of the rainiest parts of the country. ;) There are some very innovative ideas that are only a Google search away, and they’ll make your home a better place to live.

Speak up. Use your voice to tell your representatives that these issues matter to you. Take a few of the minutes you’d spend playing Mafia Wars on Facebook, and use them to tell your friends about the changes you believe in. Use your money to buy eco-friendly products, and let the bigwig companies and corporations know that you want to buy products that are organic, sustainable, and affordable.

There you go. A few little things that you lovely Portlanders can start doing today, and make into habits. Yeah, we’re not all up for going completely off-the-grid and making radical changes to our lives, but just a couple small steps at a time can decrease our impact on the planet.

You can handle it. We all can. And we all should.

…and, just so we don’t veer completely away from photography, here’s one of Ben’s nightscapes… which is the kind of photo he won’t be able to capture, if we don’t take action. There’s a wealth of natural beauty in the world. Let’s do our best to preserve it.

Monday Snapshot: Making Portland (and the world) Better – event and artistic photography in Portland, OR

We’re coming off of Portland Fashion Week’s closing night of all-eco-friendly clothing designers, heading towards Blog Action Day, getting familiar with even more of the awesome local businesses in Portland, and all of this has us thinking about making the world a little bit better than it is. Issues like climate change, sustainable practices, and building a thriving local community are important to a lot of us, but we don’t always feel that we can do a lot to help with that. It’s easy to buy the big-box products, to do the one-stop shopping thing, to say that we’re too busy to do more, and to even neglect ourselves because other things seem more “important.”

It’s easy to forget that social change isn’t just a matter of some Important Person making a grand decree: it’s a series of small steps from a lot of different people. Your choice to switch to renewable power, or get rid of your excess junk on Freecycle instead of tossing it in the trash, or even shop at the local farmer’s market may not seem like a life-altering decision, but when one person makes that choice, others follow. One person becomes several, becomes dozens, hundreds, thousands… and that’s when we start to see the benefits.

So, with that in mind, today’s Snapshot is just a reminder that, no matter how small we feel, we can effect change and have a positive effect on the people and community around us. This is a young girl–smaller than a lot of us who are reading this–who took time out of her day on a drizzly Saturday, to join her family in doing some community cleanup at Lane Elementary School in SE Portland. In just a few short hours, this girl, and a few dozen volunteers from Portland own Education Northwest, cleaned up the school and its grounds, and made a HUGE difference for all the kids who go to school there.
