Just popping in to let y’all know that tomorrow night is the Sweet F.A. Fashion Show! It’s been called “the best fashion show in Portland,” by more than a few, and this round of fashions should be awesome! The lineup includes some of our favorite clients and collaborators, like Alyson Clair, Carolyn Hart, and Adam Andreas, and we’ve gotten a peek at just a few of their new garments for spring and summer… they’re definitely not to be missed!

Doors open at 8pm, with the runway show at 9pm and dancing afterwards… we hope to see you at The Fez tomorrow night!

Help-Portrait PDX – portrait and artistic photography in Portland, OR

Last week was especially busy for us, but I (Sarah) still found room in my schedule to be a part of the Help-Portrait event held here in Portland last Saturday. The mission of Help-Portrait? Find a needy person, take their portrait, create a print and give it to that person. Helping one person just wasn’t enough, though, and after several planning meetings and a flurry of e-mails and Google spreadsheets, we had over 30 volunteers coming together to shoot portraits for dozens of people in need!

I could only stay for the first half of the day, but the energy of the experience lifted my spirits all weekend. The atmosphere was warm and collaborative, and considering how many professional photographers were in the room, the space was ego-free. We’d share tips and chat about gear, lend a hand holding a reflector or testing lights, and back each other up whenever someone needed an assist. The volunteers who weren’t photographers were on-point and ready to help with hair and makeup, contacting organizations, sorting through images, or even just staying with folks who were waiting to have their portrait taken, so they wouldn’t feel lost in the shuffle. It was all about the people we were helping, and making it a positive experience for them.

No matter how many times I see it, it’s always a little surprising for me, to see the faces of the less-fortunate. When I visited China back in the summertime, I found myself shocked at the extreme circumstances of some of the disadvantaged people I encountered on the streets. At Help-Portrait, however, those less-fortunate faces didn’t look much different from my own. A lot of people, from all walks of life, have come up on tough circumstances these days, and it’s not hard to see it, if you look around you. Still, there were some very sweet families and freakin’ adorable kids who came to get their portraits done, and it was a lot of fun to meet all of these people, and watch them truly enjoying with their photo sessions and interacting with all the volunteers who came out.

Honestly, it’s hard to know what else to say that would even begin to encompass this experience, for someone who wasn’t there… it was just an amazing event all around, and watching the slideshow this morning was such a treat. I’m absolutely doing this again next year, and I know it’s only going to grow bigger and better!

Here’s the slideshow, with plenty of photos (including quite a few of my own) documenting the events of the day. It’s always enjoyable for me to simply watch people being themselves, and capture the bright moments. :)

Snapshot: Taking an Interest – portrait and artistic photography in Portland, OR

We’re still winding down after a busy day at the Holiday Cravings Shopping Party, and we’ll have photos from the event soon… but today we’re feeling like it’s high time for a snapshot.

We had the chance to see Springfield School District Superintendent Nancy Golden in action, while shooting on-location in Springfield several weeks ago. She has a reputation for being an active and forward-thinking educator: not only does she bring other educators together, but she also makes sure to stay in touch and relate with the students. More about the work that she and other educators are doing to strengthen public schools is in the latest issue of Education Northwest Magazine.

(and yes, you can book with us for photojournalistic promotional and event photography… we shoot in a variety of situations, for people from all walks of life. Just e-mail or call us to get the details!)

Monday Snapshot: Making Portland (and the world) Better – event and artistic photography in Portland, OR

We’re coming off of Portland Fashion Week’s closing night of all-eco-friendly clothing designers, heading towards Blog Action Day, getting familiar with even more of the awesome local businesses in Portland, and all of this has us thinking about making the world a little bit better than it is. Issues like climate change, sustainable practices, and building a thriving local community are important to a lot of us, but we don’t always feel that we can do a lot to help with that. It’s easy to buy the big-box products, to do the one-stop shopping thing, to say that we’re too busy to do more, and to even neglect ourselves because other things seem more “important.”

It’s easy to forget that social change isn’t just a matter of some Important Person making a grand decree: it’s a series of small steps from a lot of different people. Your choice to switch to renewable power, or get rid of your excess junk on Freecycle instead of tossing it in the trash, or even shop at the local farmer’s market may not seem like a life-altering decision, but when one person makes that choice, others follow. One person becomes several, becomes dozens, hundreds, thousands… and that’s when we start to see the benefits.

So, with that in mind, today’s Snapshot is just a reminder that, no matter how small we feel, we can effect change and have a positive effect on the people and community around us. This is a young girl–smaller than a lot of us who are reading this–who took time out of her day on a drizzly Saturday, to join her family in doing some community cleanup at Lane Elementary School in SE Portland. In just a few short hours, this girl, and a few dozen volunteers from Portland own Education Northwest, cleaned up the school and its grounds, and made a HUGE difference for all the kids who go to school there.

FUSE: a black tie fashion fundraiser event – event and fashion photography in Portland, Oregon

Last week, we gave you a peek at Portland Fashion Synergy and its visiting guests from Henan, its ambitious goals for relations between Portland and China, and of course, its plans for a runway show unlike any other seen in Portland. Friday night was that runway show, and it was nothing short of amazing.

We’ve shot at our fair share of Portland runways, and some fashion shows seem less about the clothes, and more about creating an excuse to party until 3am. (do we need any more of those?) At some shows, there isn’t even a genuine runway… an aisle or a hallway, perhaps, but it’s more guerilla fashion than upper-crust. This is Portland, and although we have plenty of designers with forward-thinking vision, pulling together a major runway event is no simple task.

PDXFS generated a lot of buzz and made big promises for their show, and FUSE didn’t disappoint. The Kriedel Ballroom at the Portland Art Museum made the perfect venue for showcasing garments with an artistic flair, and the production value showed in the rich details of the stage, decor, and of course, the elevated runway. We’d love to see more of this kind of energy in Portland’s fashion community, so we’re looking forward to seeing what PDXFS brings our way next.

These are just a few shots from the runway show. To see more of what you might have missed, take a look at our online gallery of photos from the evening!

Chinese fashion delegation arrives in PDX for FUSE – event and fashion photography in Portland, Oregon

Yesterday was a big day for Portland fashion: a delegation of representatives from the Henan Fashion Association in China landed in our city! PDX Fashion Synergy is a group in Portland, dedicated to collaborating with and supporting the local fashion community, and there will be meetings and tours throughout the visit, as PDXFS works towards forging new partnerships between the Chinese and Portland designers.

PDXFS is also putting on a black tie fashion show fundraiser, FUSE, this Friday night! VIP tickets are already sold out for the show, but General Admission tickets are still available, and we’ll be there to cover the event! They’ll be showing designs brought from China by the visiting delegation, as well as lines from Portland-based designers such as Emily Katz, MAYTEE, and the men’s line Defyance.
